A Night at the Opera (1935)
Let’s start with a classic film and an undisputed icon in comedy. There were actually three of them. The Marx Brothers, a real family who rose to fame in vaudeville, took Hollywood by storm with their comedy movies. A Night at the Opera is their best film, filled with rapid-fire wordplay and ingenious insults. They only managed to get away with it because the film industry wasn’t regulated. Groucho Marx portrays Otis B. Driftwood is a shrewish businessman for a wealthy opera investor. Harpo and Chico Marx are the sidekicks of a humble background vocal who is in a love triangle between a well-known tenor. They all end up on a steamer boat sailing from Italy to New York where they have high jinks. In a plot to ruin the opening night of the opera, the three Marx Brothers come together. Don’t be confused, the plot of this movie isn’t the main point. The fast-paced action takes the brothers from one heartbreaking situation to the next. The Marx Brothers are amazing, but their absurd antics would not be half as funny without straight men. Margaret Dumont is a shaman who looks aghast at the brothers as they run rings around her self-deprecating image of propriety, dealing with embarrassment and outrage, among other things. The Blues Brothers (1980)
This film features Saturday Night Live founder John Belushi at his best. Belushi, a retired musician Jake Blues says more in this movie with one eyebrow than most actors can in three acts. He’s a great combination with Dan Aykroyd and Elwood Blues. The band got back together and gave us a million laughs, each with their idiosyncratic take on physical comedy. As if all that wasn’t enough, The Blues Brothers features a list of famous celebrities from the late 1970s. Each one seems to enjoy their chance at a piece of the action. Monty Python and The Holy Grail (1975)
This movie is a great choice for comedy GOAT lists and those who enjoy drinking games. Their roles include King Arthur and his round table of knights, including legends like Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad, as well as lesser-known heroes like Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot and Sir Not-Appearing-in-this-Film, as they caper around the English countryside in search of the Holy Grail. They encounter villains like the three-headed knights, rude French soldiers, and a vicious rabbit along the way. Don’t expect a linear plot. The movie takes you on a wild ride through absurdist sidetracks. There are plenty of anachronisms and snide comments from the camera look behind-the-scenes, and even a musical number that serves no purpose. It’s a lot simpler to follow than the Monty Python TV series.
