What Should a Person Avoid Eating during Loose Motions?

Loose motions or diarrhoea may be inconvenient and uncomfortable. If left untreated, one can have serious health consequences.

Common symptoms of loose motion include feeling sick, puking, being dehydrated, and having bowel movements that are so loose and watery that you hardly have time to make it to the washroom. It may lead to symptoms such as weakness, fever, tiredness, cramping, stomach discomfort, and loss of appetite.

Knowing which meals to ingest and which foods to avoid is crucial when you have loose motions. It is because the foods you eat significantly affect your condition.

Foods to avoid if you have loose motions-

These are some of the foods that have a reputation for making diarrhoea worse:

Foods rich in fat

When you have diarrhoea, eating foods with a high-fat content might make it worse, leading to frequent bowel movements.  

It may occur because diarrhoea or loose motion can momentarily decrease your body’s capacity to absorb fat. Nonetheless, if your body cannot absorb fat, food may go through your system quicker than usual. It is because fat generally requires more time to digest, which slows down the circulation of food through your system.

Nuts, fried meals, sauces or salads, and meat dishes with either added fat or a high natural fat content should be avoided.

Products derived from milk

If you have diarrhoea, you may find that you cannot digest dairy products properly. It may last for weeks or months after your sickness has cleared up. Cheese, milk, butter, and cream are all dairy products. Avoid eating them since they contain lactose, which can worsen your condition. 

Nonetheless, since yoghurt includes living enzymes that renew the healthy bacteria in your stomach, eating yoghurt might benefit your digestive system. When experiencing loose stools, it is better to have plain yoghurt since the extra sugars in flavoured yoghurt might be irritating to the digestive tract.

Spicy, fried, or greasy foods

Dishes that are fried, fatty, or filled with cream and other fats should be avoided. Instead of fried veggies, consider eating vegetables that have been cooked or steamed, along with lean proteins.

It would be best if you avoid peppers and other spices when you have loose motions since they might irritate your digestive system and contribute to your pain. Your body may see this as a problem and respond by directing additional water to your digestive tract to calm it. Because of the extra water, the food in your digestive tract moves through your intestines more quickly, which may eventually result in loose stools.

Food that is too sweet

Consuming a large number of meals high in sugar may lead to bloating, cramps, diarrhoea, and discomfort in the stomach. Refined sugar, such as that found in baked goods, processed foods and your everyday cup of tea or coffee, can attract water into the large intestine or hinder it from absorbing water. It can result in more loose motions.

When you have diarrhoea, you should avoid meals and beverages high in sugar, including baked goods, candy, and soda, even if they include artificial sweeteners.

Gas-inducing foods

If you are suffering from diarrhoea, you should avoid eating certain foods known to cause gas since these foods might make your symptoms more severe and increase your pain. These foods are:

  • Beans and other types of legumes, such as chickpeas and kidney beans, due to their high fibre content and the presence of raffinose, a kind of complex sugar that is difficult to break down.
  • Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, etc. 
  • Chewing gum should be avoided. It can cause you to swallow a lot of air, which may lead to gas.
  • Aerated beverages, such as soda pop, are carbonated and contain a significant amount of gas. Avoid them too!

Products high in dietary fibre

Despite their fibre content, whole grains with laxative properties may not be helpful if you are experiencing diarrhoea—these substances bond to stomach fluids and cause you to go to the toilet more often. Additionally, since your digestive processes are a little bit delayed, it may lead to the accumulation of gas, which will add to your issues.


If your diarrhoea isn’t severe, you can control it by consuming light and easy to digest food and adequate water. However, consulting a doctor is essential if the symptoms persist as it may lead to dehydration and further complications if left untreated.
