With a physical hard disk drive, it is possible to treat it as multiple drives, each with its DOS-era name.

Where did the “C” drive come from?

The letter naming scheme for computer drives came about when DOS was originally introduced. A drive letter is still required when using MS-DOS.

This means that your hard disk is cut into 2 parts: a main part which is called the C: (which is your hard disk where the OS resides) and the software part which is called D:

On the other hand, the ‘Data’ part (D:) is always empty on a new PC. It is used to store your downloaded and installed data.

For example, on the C: side you install your software, and on the D: side you store your data.

By leaving the c: for Windows and software, the computer will lose a lot in booting and operating speed and access to data.

Is C Drive an SSD?

How to Move Files from a C Drive to Another Drive to Free up Space?

Windows default file storage location is the C partition.

There are several file transfer methods you can use to send files back and forth from a computer to another, but the most convenient is still via the cloud.

For better comfort, it is recommended that you move your personal and computer data to another partition, disk, or another computer on the network.

In a Windows computer there are a few personal folders created by default by Windows for a user in a C drive: Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Favorites, Links, Music, Saved Games, Searches, and Videos.

If you are using a PC with a single hard drive, I will refer to the partitions specific to Windows as C: (C stands for Computer), and the partition where you can store the user’s files will be labeled D: (D stands for Data).

If you want to access these files, then, you have to choose which partition you want to boot from. Currently, we have two partitions: OS (C:) and DATA (E:).

You’ll need to change the location of the User folder where your documents, pictures, and so on are stored.

Folders are stored in a directory. Instead of the Windows partition (“Local Disk (C:)”), the files will be stored on the DATA partition (“System Reserved (E:)”).

While considering moving the files from your C drive to another drive you should be careful as you can only move the files belonging to the Users folder.

Open the File Explorer.
C: Go to the new location (C:).
D: If you want to keep the old location for the Home folder (F:), skip steps 5 and 6.

You can create a “Users” folder, then inside another folder that has the user’s name.

Go to the “[Username]” folder. Create your own personal folders you want to move to the new default location.

Choose where you want to move folders on your hard drive. To see your current location for these folders, click the Folder button and select Explore.

Navigate to the user’s home directory by entering “%USERPROFILE%” without the inverted commas in the address bar.

Right click on a personal folder and select Properties.

Go to the Location tab and click on Move. Choose the newly created folder in the new location and click on Select Folder.

Click OK to confirm the move of the folder. Here, all the files and folders present in the Windows partition (“C:”) will be moved to the DATA partition.

To verify that the folders have been moved, go to the new location (the DATA (E:) partition).

Folders with documents should now contain documents in the corresponding folder. If there are no documents yet, this means that this new feature is not activated yet.

You can easily move a user’s folders to a new partition, by right-clicking a folder and choosing “Move to a New Location.
